Land Between the Lakes

Green Turtle Bay Marina
September 21

We ran up the Ohio and into the Cumberland River.  Barkley Lock is 67 ft, which is the biggest lock we have one.  We worked off the center bollard.  I held a line forward and Don held a line aft.

We rented a slip at Green Turtle Bay Marina and I spent several days setting up this site with pictures and the log we have been writing for the last few months.

We also borrowed the marina car for some shopping then rented a car for shopping in town.

On the 24th of September we were invited to Ron and Marilyn's boat for a surprise birthday party for Ron along with Ed and Lavinia's boat.  We had such a great time and Ron and Marilyn are the best of hosts.

One day we saw a rather large turtle near the dock and were able to feed him bread from our fingers.  I guess he is the Green Turtle.

On Don's birthday, which was the Saturday, we went to the Barbecue on the River in Paducah with Ed and Lavinia.  What fun we all had.  We ate until we were in pain and walked around looking at the booths then went to look at the quilts at the National Quilting Museum.  Its just a gorgeous place.

The evening of Don's birthday we had an impromptu party on the mid deck with Ed and Lavinia, Ron and Marilyn and Faye and J.  It was a great time and quite a surprise for Don.  He got a gallon of oil from Ron and Ed brought him a pie.

Enjoying Paducah

It was the first time we had really stayed at a marina away from Gloucester and we had just a great time meeting people and partying with friends.  We like the anchorage very much, but it was also fun to be with friends there.

Barkley Lake
September 28

We went to Marilyn and Ron's boat, 2 Play, and bought some of our Christmas presents from her jewelry that she makes.  It is such beautiful work that it was hard to keep from buying more.

After that we straightened things just a little bit then went to pump out.  Everyone who was at Don's birthday party was on the dock waving and 4 cameras were taking pictures of us.  It was pretty cool.

We went to a small bay and anchored by about 1:00, then we just relaxed for the rest of the day.  We did get a chance to talk with some friends and family.  Amy called for a few minutes and John called now that he has a phone back.

It was quite windy and we did a 360 on the anchor during the night.

We spent two nights at the anchorage and it was so quiet and beautiful.  We saw a number of fishermen and lots of fish jumping around us.  One guy was fishing with a casting net and we kind of thought that he was catching bait for a bait shop or something.

While we were there we got the web log caught up and made disks for friends and Don painted the spots that needed it and cleaned the deck and wheelhouse up

The anchorage was a great holding ground with kind of a mud / clay bottom.

Green Turtle Bay Marina, KY
September 30

We went back to Green Turtle Bay so we could go get Amy at the airport.  We left our beautiful little anchorage about 10:30 and just piddled behind a tow all the way back.  It was such a beautiful day on the water.

We realized that we could not use the van because we didn't have any car insurance, so Ron took us to the airport and we ran some errands.

We visited and had a lot of fun.  Amy brought me beautiful butterfly wings and a journal with some sox.  Amy and I stayed up until 2:00 AM.
