Workbench Log - January 2006

1/29/06

We are searching for a better wire source for price and shipping time.  Also reworking the logo for the Kingfisher Designs site and our cards.  We are thinking of making a change in the typeface before the cards are printed.

Also - all of the links in the shopping cart are in a mess and need to be redone.  A website seems to have a life of its own.  The forms went belly up on all 3 sites for no reason, then they fixed themselves.

1/29/06

When I started this studio journal, I kind of wondered how it would be of any benefit to us for the time spent.  It really does help us see what you have managed to do in a month and it is kind of encouraging.  Today we are working on faceted rings and will be photographing the 2 tutorials for the site.

1/28/06

Worked on pieces today.  Don set some beautiful faceted stones.  My confidence took a beating as I seemed to fumble almost everything I tried.  Some days you just should not pick up your pliers.

Ended up working on the site until 2:30 am.

1/27/06

Still working on our cards.  The old ones are terrible - particularly for artisans.  We printed one out to see how we like it.  We will have 2 sides with a photo on one side.

The photo just needs to remind people that we make wire jewelry.  We still aren't sure what piece to put on the cards yet.

1/26/06

We did get our photo portfolios ready so we won't be caught again without some way to show our jewelry to people again.  Everywhere we go people ask what kind of jewelry we make, so we made 4 x 6 albums with about 18 pictures to show.

Also started designing the cards.

Tree of Life

1/25/06

The copper came in that I had ordered.  I am planning some "Tree of Life" Pendants and more collars and armbands.  Also still designing our adjustable ring series.  So many people have enlarged knuckles and can't wear a ring.

Setting Faceted Stones

1/24/06

Practiced setting a faceted stone in wire.  Used a glass "stone" and copper to get the technique.  I still have problems with a couple of steps.

1/22/06

Finally did the collar and armband that was ordered before the new year.  I had the metal, but was afraid to touch the 12 gauge.  I made sketches, then made it up in fine wire then made it up in 12 gauge copper to get the lines right.  I was so nervous working on the heavy and expensive wire that I stood up and ran back and forth from the neck mandrel to my work bench.

Organizing Materials

1/21/06

Seems that everything is getting in the way of the work we need to do but it all seems to need doing.  We have spent 3 days just trying to organize our materials and tools.  It is more difficult here in the motor home than when we are at home in the cabin.

1/18/06

Worked on Spectrum site.  Adding tutorials for the titanium/niobium line.  The big problem with these metals is that they have the image "kids wear that".  I am trying to make it more "adult".

Picky Jobs

1/16/06

Working on the list.  Finished the Guild website and wrote the Jumpstart for this week.  Even wrote out the Weekly Gemstone.  Wish to get back to making jewelry.

1/15/06

Spent the day anodizing titanium and niobium.  Niobium is really expensive, but wow does it ever show the color when it is anodized.  It has a wonderful satiny sheen and is far smoother than titanium.  It also seems easier to work.

Wholesale Market

1/10 /06

Back in Greenville and on to the wholesale jewelry market.  lots of beautiful stones and I was lucky enough to find some Dynasty Shards, which I had wanted for a while.

1/7/06

Photographed Jean Payne's hand painted porcelain for jurying into the Mississippi Craftsmen's Guild.  Very different than photographing jewelry, but turned out fine.  Such beautiful pieces.

1/6/06

Spent much of the day taking photos for the Antique Guild in Aberdeen.  They will be used in a flyer and website for the shop.

1/5/06

Worked on a commission of 5 pieces.  Three pieces are opals and there is a matching collar and armband to be made of 10 gauge wire.  These earrings were a redesign and I was unwilling to remove them from their original bezel setting because I feared damaging the opals.

TableTop Studio

1/3/06

We have been lucky to have this time in Aberdeen to work.  Today was photography day.  The new Tabletop Studio is working well and we are taking tons of photos of stones and jewelry.

1/2/06

We spent the day making jewelry.  Our styles are decidedly different and the way we work is also.  Don's craftsmanship is meticulous and everything is planned out.  His precision is actually amazing.  My work just seems to take off in all directions and ends up where I wanted it (if I am lucky).

Photographs

12/27/05

Finished photos and writing for the article in Step-by-Step Wire Jewelry on Anodized Titanium pins.  I hope they like it.

12/23/05

Finished commissioned opal ring.  The opal was not a standard cut and the setting fit it perfectly.

Working on the Book

12/14/05

Spent the day in Harrisonburg, VA working on Showcase.  The book is coming together, but the list is long.  I fear I will miss my self-imposed deadline of Feb. 15.

12/4/05

While I was in New Hampshire, Don wove this using sterling silver and gold filled wire.  What a beautiful thing it is!

12/3/05

In Massachusetts I found these beautiful opals.  Just gorgeous!  Bracelets and earrings planned.

Photos Needed

11/25/05

We ordered the Tabletop Studio.  Hope it works better for the pictures.  We have a lot of photos that need to be taken in the next 2 months.

11/19/05

Spent the day anodizing titanium.  The colors are coming out great.  We are looking forward to trying niobium as well.
