Biography
Louise Coulson designs and creates
hand woven jewelry for Kingfisher Designs. She
and her
husband are both designers. Don's creates
knotted and braided
jewelry.
She has
a background as a teacher, writer and fiber artisan. She
definitely has both feet firmly planted in mid-air. She designs
"outside the box" with a fanciful constant questioning of the
materials and their possibilities both accidental and by design
She started knitting at 5 years old and
taught hand spinning and weaving for 12 years. She uses the
silver as if it were thread or yarn. She
coils, weaves, braids and sculpts the metal to create
one-of-a-kind and limited edition pieces that reflect the best
in creativity, craftsmanship and materials.
Her bloom-where-you're-planted philosophy was created by
living the life of a transient. After going to 17 schools
by the time she received her degree, she and Don moved 43 times
in 40 years of marriage.
From her first book (written at the age of 10), Our Rocks and
Minerals to writings on diamonds and Baroque jewelry in her
classes as a student, Louise has nurtured a passion for jewelry.
Many years of working with fibers
has given Louise a different perspective of the available
materials and an
array of skills to draw on.
Her design process is a journey of discovery. It consists
of sketching, modeling and making practice pieces to get the
proportion, technique and detail figured out before the pieces
are rendered in gold, silver, titanium and copper. We
incorporate the historical tradition and techniques for
knitting, weaving, lace making, knotting, braiding and
chainmaille in our work.
